Laker agates differ from other agates found around the world in its rich red, orange, and yellow coloring. Datolite is a borosilicate mineral. It usually comes in the form of crystals, and the only place in the world where datolite forms in porcelain, cauliflower-like solid nodules is the copper ore regions of the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. The most common datolite color is white, but it can occur in a range of pastel colors influenced by metals. Greenstone occurs only on Isle Royale and in some basalt formations on the Keweenaw Peninsula. Greenstones are the state gem of Michigan.
